Former Rwanda international Danny Usengimana has called on young footballers to use their talent to defend and elevate the country’s pride, urging them to dream of winning trophies for Rwanda and flying the national flag high across Africa.

Usengimana was speaking to budding players at Bright Football Academy in Rugende, Gasabo District, on Monday, March 2, where he donated training equipment to support grassroots football development.

The former APR FC and Police FC striker handed over 21 match balls and two sets of training kits for the academy’s coaches, equipment worth Rwf2.3 million.

Addressing players and technical staff of the academy, the Canada-based player stressed that nurturing young talent is key to the long-term success of Rwandan football, noting that the future of the national team depends on structured academies and proper mentorship.

"As someone who played football at a competitive level, I feel responsible for giving back,” he said.

"These children have talent, and with discipline and hard work, they can achieve great things. They must aim to make Rwanda proud by winning trophies and raising our flag high in African football.”

The former Amavubi striker emphasized that football is not only about individual success but also about representing the nation with honour and commitment. He encouraged the young players to stay focused on both education and training while believing in their ability to reach the highest level.

Bright Football Academy head coach Eric Habimana welcomed the support, describing it as both practical and motivational.

"It is not common to receive backing from a former Amavubi goal scorer. This inspires the players mentally and boosts their confidence,” Habimana said. "We are determined to work even harder and ensure that at least 10 players graduate from this academy every year to join other clubs as professional footballers.”

The academy, launched in April 2025, was born out of a shared vision between Usengimana and Emmanuel Imanishimwe to give back to the game by creating opportunities for children to develop their talent.

Bright FA currently trains 150 boys and girls across the U10, U13, U16 and U17 categories, positioning itself as a breeding ground for future stars capable of representing Rwanda at both national and international levels.
