After two exciting stages in Rubavu District, Tour du Rwanda 2026 now heads toward the volcanoes region, with riders set to finish in Musanze District after covering 84 kilometers on Friday.
Though relatively short, Stage Six presents a demanding profile that could significantly impact the general classification battle.
The reduced distance has introduced new tactical dynamics within the peloton. A total of 72 riders remain in contention, while approximately 11 riders were dropped during Stage Five.
Despite being just 84 kilometers long, the stage features a challenging 1,435 meters of elevation gain.
Riders will depart Rubavu via the hilly Sashwara route, covering the first 28.8 kilometers before descending toward Lake Muhazi. From there, they will proceed to Kinigi in Musanze District and tackle the final 11.7 kilometers to the finish line.
With continuous climbs and technical sections, positioning and team tactics will be crucial.
Riders to watch
Musanze is considered the home base of Team Rwanda, potentially giving an edge to veteran rider Patrick Byukusenge, who is making his 14th appearance in the race.
Germany’s Jermaine Zemke of Rembe Rad-Net stunned observers by claiming victory in Rubavu — an achievement few had predicted for the 20-year-old rider.
NSN Development Team also appears well-positioned to challenge for another stage win and defend the yellow jersey. In 2025, the Musanze stage was won by Australian cyclist Brady Gilmore, then riding for Israel-Premier Tech before the team’s rebranding.
In that same edition, Moritz Kretschy finished fourth in Stage Two behind his teammate, recording the same time. Now leading the 2026 general classification, Kretschy has both historical confidence and strong form on his side as he aims to retain yellow — and possibly seize another stage victory.
