A Tour du Rwanda 2026 caravan vehicle veered off the road in Gabiro, Gatsibo District, and hit several spectators who were following the opening stage of the race, leaving two people dead and six others injured.
According to a statement released by Tour du Rwanda management, the accident occurred in Ryabega Sector on Sunday, February 22, as riders were heading toward the finish line in Rwamagana.
"The injured are receiving care, and we are closely monitoring their condition,” race organisers said in a statement, adding that police have launched investigation to determine the cause of the accident.
Tour du Rwanda 2026 has attracted 84 riders from 17 teams across the globe. The opening stage, from Rukomo in Gicumbi District to Rwamagana, stands out as the longest of the race at 173.6 kilometres.
