Uganda’s senior men’s national handball team marked a historic milestone on Wednesday with their first-ever appearance at the Africa Cup of Nations, despite suffering a 37–21 defeat in their opening match.
While the scoreline highlighted the experience gap between Uganda and their opponents, the occasion itself represented a landmark moment for Ugandan handball and the country’s wider sporting history.
Speaking after the match, head coach Jimmy Remie Orotin described the team’s participation as a major breakthrough, particularly for the men’s game, which has long lacked exposure at the continental level.
"This is a very historic and important moment for us,” Orotin said. "Uganda has been competitive in women’s handball for many years, but for the men, this level of competition has been missing. This tournament gives our players a chance to test themselves against Africa’s best.”
Orotin stressed that the team’s focus goes beyond results, with development and learning taking priority at this stage. He noted that facing established sides such as Angola provides invaluable lessons in intensity, technical ability and tactical discipline.
"When you play against teams you usually only watch on television, it helps players improve individually and gain confidence,” he added. "The score is not everything. What matters is what we take back home.”
Despite the opening defeat, the coach remains optimistic, pointing out that Uganda still has two group matches to play, including a crucial encounter against Gabon that could shape their tournament campaign.
Team captain Francis Ongom echoed his coach’s sentiments, describing the debut as an emotional and proud moment for the squad.
"It’s our first time at this tournament, and it means a lot to all of us,” Ongom said. "We wanted to start with a win, but it didn’t happen.”
He emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and motivation moving forward. "This competition shows us the level we need to reach. It pushes us to work harder and believe in the future of Ugandan handball,” he said.
Despite the setback, Uganda remain determined to make the most of their historic debut as they continue their journey on the continental stage.
