KAYONZA/NGOMA – A village leader in Kayonza district was arrested and detained at Kabarondo Police Post after he allegedly stabbed a cow when it was about to be repossessed.

Jean Claude Nkurinziza, 30, is said to have acquired the cow fraudulently.

A source said that Nkurunziza was acting out of anger after the cow was given to a deserving beneficiary during the redistribution exercise.

Andrew Rwamugabo, the Executive Secretary of the sector said that Nkurunziza would not get away with his actions.
"He needs to be punished for setting a very bad example as a local leader,” Rwamugabo said.

The Kayonza district Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, Anita Mutesi condemned the act.

"These are characters that cannot be tolerated within our communities. They were not supposed to be given the cows in the first instance, and they go on to commit such crimes,” she said.

In a related development, Police in Ngoma district are holding the headmistress of Jarama Secondary School, Drocella Muhawenimana, for selling off the cow she had been given.

Local authorities say Muhawenimana, who is also a member of the Ngoma district Advisory Council, slaughtered the cow to sell the meat immediately after learning about the government’s directive to redistribute the cows.
