Police destroy illicit drugs

NYAGATARE -  Police in Nyagatare district on Friday destroyed assorted illicit drugs impounded from illegal dealers. The items under different brand names included 2150 litres of local brew commonly known as Kanyanga, 800kgs gin made in Uganda known as Suzie and 300 cartons of ‘leading waragi’ another gin made in Uganda.

NYAGATARE -  Police in Nyagatare district on Friday destroyed assorted illicit drugs impounded from illegal dealers.

The items under different brand names included 2150 litres of local brew commonly known as Kanyanga, 800kgs gin made in Uganda known as Suzie and 300 cartons of ‘leading waragi’ another gin made in Uganda. 

Also destroyed was 100 kg of marijuana, one tonne of chief waragi and sachets of other local brews.The exercise took place at Nyagatare Police Post. 

Speaking to The New Times, Enock Byabashaija, the Nyagatare district vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, who officiated over the exercise warned people involved in  smuggling banned liquor saying they would face the law.

‘Previously people caught with illicit drugs were only fined because there was no law put in place. But we now have laws that punish such offenders,’ he said.
