AFTER a very quiet 2009, the national boxing federation (Raba) has tabled a national boxing meet. According to Raba’s secretary general Eugene Ndashikirwa, the tournament is scheduled for mid-January. “For now, we have CNLS (National Aids council) on board while the Ministry of Sports and Culture (Minispoc) has also pledged their support,” said Ndashikirwa.

"For now, we have CNLS (National Aids council) on board while the Ministry of Sports and Culture (Minispoc) has also pledged their support,” said Ndashikirwa. The championship was called off twice last November after Raba’s failure to draw sponsors.
Clubs expected to compete in the tournament include ETM, Kimisagara, Musanze, Inkuba and Remera boxing club.
National technical director Gashuji Kananura also hinted that the championship will be used as a selection ground for the national team ahead of this year’s AIBA Youth World Championship scheduled to run from April 12-25 in Baku, Azerbaijan.
Gashuji also noted that boxers should at least compete in six tournaments each year as stipulated under the Confederation of African Amateur Boxing (CABA) and International Amateur Boxing Association (AIBA) rules.
