THE national athletics federation (RAF) has unveiled plans to boost local competitions with an electronic timer.

According to RAF president Jean Paul Munyandamutsa, efforts to purchase the equipment are underway after discussing the issue with the Ministry of Sports and Culture (Minispoc).

"We are in the process of acquiring new equipment to boost the sport. We are planning to get the timer first and then others later,” said Munyandamutsa.

For past competitions, RAF has been hiring the equipment.
Munyandamutsa said the equipment will be a big step forward for the sport and also good preparation for the Belgium Van Dame memorial race.

The 36th edition of the prestigious Belgacom Van Dame memorial will be hosted in Kigali in 2012.
