The procedure, carried out at 33 weeks of pregnancy, was performed on a mother with a history of pregnancy losses caused by Rhesus negative sensitization, a condition where the mother’s immune system attacks the fetus’s red blood cells. This success is the first of its kind at CHUK.

Earlier, on November 11, CHUK’s Pediatric Surgery team successfully performed a Laparoscopic-Assisted Anoplasty on an eight-month-old infant to correct Anorectal Malformation, a congenital condition which affects the rectum and anus. Led by Dr. Edmond Ntaganda, the team conducted this minimally invasive surgery, without foreign assistance.
