Six die after consuming local brew

NYABIHU - Six people died and many more were admitted after consuming a contaminated local brew at a market place in Nyabihu district, The New Times has learnt.

Locals consumed the brew at Vunga market of Shyira sector in Nyabihu district on December 17, 2009.

Nyabihu District Mayor, Jean Damascene Ndagijimana said that four people died within their homes before getting to hospitals while two died at a health centre. 

The woman who made that local brew identified as Priscilla Mujawamaria was among those admitted but discharged later on. 

It is reported that close to 145 people were admitted to different hospitals within the district following this indicident.

TRAC intervened and confirmed presence of a deadly bacterium in the brew.
