BUGESERA - Members of a maize grower’s cooperative known as Indatwa kukigori are complaining about the adverse effects Akagera river floods have had on their fields.

This was revealed yesterday by the cooperative’s managers who talked to The New Times.

The cooperative society situated in Biryogo village- Gashora sector in Bugesera district, has maize fields a long the river.

According to Jean Pierre Rwasa, the manager of the cooperative, more than half of the maize crop was washed away by heavy floods that engulfed their fields.

"We have suffered heavy losses due to the floods.
the swamp on which we grow maize is poorly protected. We need the intervention of the government, if we are to make profits as a maize cooperative,” he said.

Zahabu Nikuze a member of the cooperative lamented the loss, but said she is still ready to engage in the business, since it has proved to be promising.

"We are not going to do well this season, but I am sure next time we will.

We have to stick to it, but let something be done to stop the floods from reaching our fields,” she said.

The cooperative was recently given an opportunity, to supply the maize to the World Food Program (WFP), with help of the Ministry of Commerce, officials said.
