Fourteen officials in Nyabihu District have been arrested on allegations of embezzlement linked to the rehabilitation of homes for survivors of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. The Governor of Western Province, Jean-Bosco Ntibitura, confirmed the arrests to The New Times on Tuesday, October 7, stating that the individuals were taken into custody on Monday night on allegations concerning the rehabilitation of at least 17 houses in various sectors of the district. He said the Executive Secretary of the District and the representative of Genocide survivors' association Ibuka in Nyabihu are among the suspects. ALSO READ: Kirehe: Executive secretary arrested over embezzlement “They are being held accountable for responsibilities related to the rehabilitation of 17 homes of Genocide survivors located in different parts of the district,” Ntibitura explained. “The specific issues that led to their arrests are currently being investigated by competent organs. We know the homes were under rehabilitation, but we have not known any issues around their arrests,” he added.
