Has set his eyes on smacking the current 10km record.

RWANDA’s acclaimed long distance athlete Dieudonne Disi has vowed to break the eight-year 10km record at the upcoming Rendezvous National championship.

Disi, who will be running for Ministry of Defence (MoD), will also use the event as a trial ground for the Abu Dhabi Half Marathon set for January 8, 2010.

The current national record is 28minutes and 52 seconds set back in 2000 by Joseph Nsengiyumva, who is now based in Canada.

"I have good confidence because recently, I ran 27.22 in an international event,” the 29-year-old said.

Rendezvous National is set for December 19-20 at Amahoro stadium.

Last year, Disi was a double winner after sweeping the 5000m (14:12:36) and 10,000m (31:10:58) but he has opted out this year.

"It’s an opportunity for other athletes to win the two events.”

Disi also disclosed that he is on the verge of renewing his contract with main sponsors Adidas. The current deal ends 2011.

"We are in talks and I hope they will increase on the bonuses,” he added.

Recently, he clocked 1hour, 1 minute and 32 seconds to win Morocco’s half marathon.
