HUYE – Nurses and doctors working in different hospitals in the Western Province pledged to improve service delivery in their respective work stations after completing a two-week seminar on health care held in Huye district.

"There is no doubt that this seminar has improved the capacity of medical personnel, they were engaged in practical work in the neighbouring health facilities during the seminar and the results are there,” said Thacienne Bucyana, the director of Mibilizi Hospital in Rusizi district.

Medical statistics indicate that in the year 2000 about 1701 out of 100,000 children died during birth due to poor medical care. However according to a 2005 survey the deaths had gone down to 750.

According to the Ministry of Health, the target is to reduce the number to 350 by 2015.

Jeanne Nyirarukundo, one of the participants noted that she have been equipped with vital skills to help reduce the child birth rate.

"Poor service delivery in health facilities is one of the reasons why some pregnant women opt to stay home,” she said. "This seminar has equipped us with skills to deliver better services,” said

The seminar was attended by nurses and doctors from the Western districts of Rusizi, Nyamasheke, Rutsiro and Ngororero.

According to Dr Bucyana, there will be a follow up evaluation in all represented hospitals to check the implementation of the new skills taught.
