The Commuter Taxi Operators’ Association, Atraco Nyarugenge district  to redece the monthly remittances from rent of parkng space at Nyabugogo Taxi park.
Currently the private transporters’ association remits Rwf 10m to the district every month.

Atraco’s request comes barely months after it reduced parking fees for every vehicle from Rwf 2,300 from Rwf 3,800.

Speaking to The New Times, the association’s president, Col (Rtd) Ludovic Twahirwa Dodo, said that there was an increase of Rwf 5m to what they initially paid.

"We have requested for a reduction because at first, we were paying Rwf 5 million but it was increased to Rwf 10 million per month,” Twahirwe said.

Although he could not reveal exactly when the increment was effected, he stressed it was abrupt.

He also explained that the current situation of Nyabugogo Taxi Park, especially during the rainy season, hinders the association’s operations.

"The park lacks a proper drainage system. It flood whenever it rains, hence discouraging passengers from coming into the park”.

Recently, Kigali City Council announced that African Development Corporation (ADC) and SORAS, a local insurance company, have come up with a Rwf 2.5bn package to redevelop Nyabugogo terminal.

When contacted for comment, Nyarugenge district acting Mayor, Berchmas Kamali, confirmed Atraco`s request and gave reasons for the increment.

"I received the request letter, but the increment was a result of a survey conducted to determine the earnings from the taxi park among others,” Kamali said.

He explained that all such costs are aimed at rehabilitating the taxi park to improve its conditions.

However, he promised that the technical financial team is considering the request and it will come-up with a report in three days.
