The Director of environment compliance, awareness and cleaner production at Rwanda Development Board (RDB) has urged local industries to implement the cleaner production strategy to compete favourably at regional level.

Theobald Mashinga made the call at the closure of a four-day training of representatives from 40 manufacturing companies that focused on encouraging them to embrace cleaner production.

"Rwanda industries should take advantage of the cleaner production to favorably compete in the East African common market. Cleaner production cuts costs making one to be able to sell at a competitive price,” urged Theobald Mashinga.

Silver Ssebagala, the Director of the Uganda Cleaner Production Centre suggested that there should be legal structures encouraging the implementation of cleaner production.

"Cleaner production will thrive in an enabling environment. A strong environmental legal framework and policies should be adopted to encourage cleaner production,” he said.
Ssebagala was among the initiators of clean production in Rwanda 2005.
