DESPITE conceding a third successive defeat at the Africa U-19 Girls’ tournament in Dar es Salaam yesterday, it was by far Rwanda’s best performance at the five-nation tournament.

After back to back humiliating defeats against Uganda (lost by nine wickets) and Kenya (lost by eight wickets), the debutants put in a spirited effort.

Chasing Zambia’s 115, Rwanda finished 30 runs short after scoring 85 runs (team’s highest score in the tournament) in their allotted 30 overs.

"We are improving by the day and I think the girls put in a good fight today. It is a good learning experience for us and we hope to build on it in future events,” the team’s stand in coach Robert Mugisha said.

Evodia Mukaremera top scored for Rwanda with 15 runs while Nicole Mukeshimana picked two wickets.

Rwanda wind up their campaign this morning with a tie against hosts Tanzania. Zambia plays Kenya in the other day’s game.
