Kagame in Arusha for EAC Summit

President Paul Kagame this week was in Arusha, Tanzania for the 11th Summit of Heads of State of the East African Community (EAC).The Summit is the highest EAC organ and it gives general direction and impetus for the development and achievement of the objectives of the community.

President Kagame took over the EAC chairmanship from Uganda President Yoweri Museveni last year.

Mutsindashyaka arrested over graft

Theoneste Mutsindashyaka, the former State Minister for Primary and Secondary Education has been arrested for alleged embezzlement of state resources, and under-declaration of his assets before the office of the ombudsman.

Mutsindashyaka was arrested on Tuesday at around 9pm and spent the night at Kicukiro police station.

The former Minister has been battling different court cases all to do with mismanagement of state resources.

In a related development, Mutsidashyaka was also this week convicted for bending tendering rules in the case of construction of the headquarters of Eastern Province, when he was still governor of the province.

Kagame receives German investors

President Paul Kagame this week, received a delegation of German investors who are on a fact finding mission aimed at identifying investment opportunities in the country.

The forty seven - man delegation of mainly business people and journalists, was organized by a member of the Presidential Advisory Council (PAC), Christian Angermayer, under the support of the Altira Group of which he is an executive board member.

Commerce and Industry minister Monique Nsanzabaganwa was quoted saying that the group, which is in the country for the first time, was pleased with the progress Rwanda has registered in a short time after the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Gov’t welcomes arrest of top FDLR leaders

Following the arrest of FDLR leader Ignace Murwanashyaka and his deputy, Straton Musoni ,in Germany,  government welcomed the move this week, saying the two are part of a terrorist group that has not only committed crimes in Rwanda, but also in the DRC.

Murwanashyaka and Musoni were arrested following a warrant issued by German Federal Prosecution office.

A communiqué issued by German federal prosecutors said that the two fugitives were arrested after it was confirmed that they were leaders of a "terrorist group (FDLR) that is accused of crimes against humanity and different war crimes.”

Rwanda least corrupt in the region

Rwanda emerged the least corrupt nation in East Africa and the Great Lakes Region according to a Corruption Perception Index 2009 released by Transparency International (TI).

The report said corruption is still very much prevalent on the African Continent.

The report released this week indicates that across the globe, Rwanda ranks 89th out of 180 countries, and shared the 10th position of least corrupt countries on the African continent alongside Lesotho, Malawi and Morocco.

Rwanda scored 3.3 out of a possible 10 points, improving by 0.3 from the 2008 score of 3 despite having undergone.

Kagame wins awards

President Paul Kagame was this week presented with the ‘Most Innovative People Award for Economic Innovation’ during the Lebanon2020 Summit, organized by the Global Leadership Team.

The award was received on behalf of the President by Senate President Dr. Vincent Biruta at a function held in the Lebanese capital Beirut.
