KAMONYI - Rural women’s development can be achieved if Gender Based Violence is  vercome. Rose Mukanyandwi, the National Women’s Council (CNF), district representative said at a ceremony to celebrate the achievements of Kamonyi  omen groups at Rugalika sector.

"Women are pivotal in development initiatives and poverty reduction, but the persistence of violence, abuse and denial of their rights to property still impedes their efforts to self reliance.” Mukanyandwi said.

She further noted that women have been held back by situations beyond their control such as unplanned births, stressing that they need equal say on matters of family planning and property inheritance.

The Mayor, Jacques Rutsinga, reaffirmed the district’s determination to fight GBV, warning that men who still batter their wives will not be tolerated.

He however, encouraged women to focus on new modes of undertaking socio-economic transformation within society.

In the ceremony, women grouped in cooperatives and associations hailed government and donors for supporting their initiatives.
