KARONGI – At least 700,000 out of the 2.5 million people in Western Province do not have the new national identity cards (IDs).

The provincial governor, Célestin Kabahizi, disclosed this yesterday during a consultative meeting with Government employees in Bwishyura Sector, Karongi District.

He blamed the shortcoming on local leaders who have not done enough to sensitise the public about acquiring the IDs.

"Efforts to sensitise the community to participate in nation building is a collective responsibility where each of you plays a vital role,” Kabahizi said.

He challenged the public to adhere to government’s initiatives, saying the programmes are entirely meant for their benefit.

Paul Jabo, the Executive Secretary of the Western region, called for joint efforts against poverty and ignorance which are among the leading challenges in the countryside.

"If we work together we shall undoubtedly beat the expectations of the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS),” said Jabo.
