NYAGATARE – Heavy down pour hit Karangazi sector in Nyagatare District this week, leaving several hectares of plantations and houses destroyed, officials said.

Speaking at a district security meeting held at EER Nyagatare, yesterday, the Sector Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Murenzi, said the rain destroyed 275 hectares of maize and beans. The raging storm also ripped off rooftops from  two houses.

The rain also destroyed 108 temporary shelters constructed with plastic sheets.

The Mayor, Atuhe Sabitti, called for urgent means of support to help the victims. He however, noted that affected residents can still plant new crops since there is still time for cultivation.

At the meeting, it was noted that the long draught could cause food shortages in the sectors of Rwimiyaga, Matimba and some parts of Karangazi.
