THE National Rugby team – the Silverbacks are ready to make their debut in the 17th Hima-Mak 10s tournament.

Despite failing to secure sponsorship from the ministry of Sports and Culture (Minispoc), the team is banking on sponsorship from tournament sponsors Hima Cement.

According to the first vice president of the Rwanda Rugby Federation (RRF) Gerard Nsenga, the cement factory has offered to foot the team’s transport, accommodation and meals.

"Right now, all we ask of the players is to concentrate on the training sessions because the sponsorship issue has been sorted,” Nsenga said.

Contrary to the past three years were Rwanda has been fielding the league champions, this year, RRF has opted to field the national team.

The tournament, which will also attract clubs from Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe and hosts Uganda, is slated to run from 7-8 November.

The 24-man provisional team, currently training at Rugunga is dominated by players from reigning champions Buffaloes, 2007 champions Gorillas, Sharks and UNR Grizzlies.

The tournament will be hosted at Kyadondo rugby club. MTN Heathens are the defending champions.
