KAYONZA - The officer in charge of Nyamurama Health Centre in Kayonza District, who exchanged public blows with a nurse Alirette Murekeyisoni, has been arrested and detained at Kabarondo Police Station.

Joseph Uwihanganye allegedly exchanged blows with Murekeyisoni infront of patients, over the weekend.

The district director of health, Denise Uwera confirmed the incident, describing it as regrettable. Uwera added that the nurse was also arrested.

"It is against all existing medical ethics…a fight in front of patients that ends up breaking dispensary glasses is highly regrettable. The two officials have previously been engaging in unacceptable conduct while working at this health centre which is why, we had organised to transfer them to other health centres prior to this ugly incidence,” she remarked.

The director further revealed that prior to the fight, Uwihanganye had called her complaining that Murekeyisoni’s husband had threatened him on phone.

Andrew Twamugabo the Executive Secretary, Nyamurama Sector, said he was disturbed by the character of the arrested officer in charge of Nyamurama health centre.

Twamugabo further pointed out that the health centre director had failed to command respect from workers because of his unbecoming character at the health centre.

"Apart from fighting, this officer has shown that he does not respect the position of responsibility bestowed upon him,” he added. The concerned authorities told the New Times that if found guilty of misconduct then the affected officers stand to be dismissed from their positions.
