THE regional boxing body (EACAFB) bringing together East and central African boxing federations could crumble down, Time Sport has learnt.

According to Gashuji Kananura, the technical advisor of the body, the future of the federation is at risk after its Tanzanian president Mzee Shaban was arrested over unknown reasons.

"We have planned a crisis meeting to agree on the way forward but some members are frustrating us because they do not attend meetings,” said Gashuji noting that the previous regional federation was restructured in 2007 after the Continental governing body, CAB, grew suspicious of the association’s increasing powers.

The crumbling body like the previous one (East, Central African Amateur Boxing Federation- EACAAFB) was put in place to develop the region’s boxers to continental and world levels, but has always been frustrated by internal and external administrational problems.

In a related development, Gashuji, who also doubles as Rwanda’s national boxing head coach revealed that the local boxing federation (Raba) is scheduled to host a regional Boxing championship some time next month.

The event, the first on Raba’s 2009 calendar is set to attract pugilists from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and Egypt.

Rwanda’s pugilists will also use it as a build up to next year’s Zone 5 championship.
