RULINDO- The local district authorities on Wednesday launched a four-day awareness campaign to encourage proper condom use among residents.

The launch at Base Sector in Rulindo District was done by district authorities in partnership with PSI Rwanda.

During the function, residents were taught proper use of condoms by the officials.

"Proper use of  condoms enables us to prevent the spread of HIV/AIDS as well as  unplanned pregnancies,” Mayor, Justus Kangwagye told a large gathering which had turned up at Base trading centre, stressing that condom use guarantees proper family planning.

Addressing reporters, Kangwagye said: "Presently the district has established 366 new outlets to sell the new prudence condoms. We have also conducted night cinema shows on family planning awareness and distributed over 130,000 condoms to the general population”.

He added that the campaign is part of the district’s 2009 performance targets.

"For development to be achieved, we need to guarantee the health of our population by preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS, because residents are the major source of labour needed to steer economic development. Children of school going age also need to be sensitised on proper condom use to avoid early pregnancies,” added Kangwagye.

He was flanked by the PSI Rwanda representative Emelie Nkurunziza. The campaign will be concluded at Kinihira Sector tomorrow.
