NYAGATARE - In a dramatic turn of events involving the case of district Mayor, Robert Kashemeza, four sector leaders in Nyagatare district, Eastern Province, have been arrested for allegedly being his accomplices.

They include Sam Mushabe of Nyagatare, Emmanuel Murenzi, Executive Secretary in Karangazi, Wilson Mugabo of Rwimiyaga and Alex Karengera from Matimba.

"Yes, they were arrested on Saturday and are being detained at Nyagatare Police post for alleged mismanagement of public funds,” Supt. Eric Kayiranga, police spokesperson said by phone on Sunday to The New Times.

Kayiranga said that the sector leaders were detained after investigations revealed they had illegally withdrawn money from their sector accounts in order to settle the Rwf 10 million, Kashemeza was arrested for embezzling.

Kashemeza is also currently in police custody.
"They gave about Rwf10million to Kashemeza so that he refunds public funds he is accused to have embezzled,” Kayiranga explained.

Sources from Matimba and Karangazi who spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not officially allowed to speak to the press told The New Times that the two sectors could have contributed to the tune of Rwf 6 million in order to bail out Kashemeza.

"These leaders must be punished because you cannot use public funds to bail out a Mayor who is already accused of embezzlement,” a source from Matimba stressed.
