Govt earmarks Rwf16bn for Prince House-Giporoso-Masaka road upgrade

The government has earmarked more than Rwf16 billion towards funding a project to upgrade the 10km Prince House-Giporoso-Masaka road in 2025/26, according to information from the Ministry of Infrastructure. The upgrade of the road consists of expanding it to four lanes from the current two and the construction of a flyover on a part of it. All this is meant to help check the increasing traffic on the road, according to officials. Total budget for the project is 437.12 million Chinese Yuan, which is approximately $60.5 million or Rwf86 billion, the information shows. The project will be financed by China and is expected to be completed in July 2028. This information is contained in a presentation by the Ministry of Infrastructure, which officials delivered during the 2025/26 budget hearings with the parliamentary Committee on State Budget and Patrimony, on Monday, May 12. The Director General of Rwanda Transport Development Agency (RTDA), Imena Munyampenda, told the committee that the road is one of infrastructure projects to be executed in the forthcoming fiscal year. “We expect that we will start actual construction works in January next year [2026],” Munyampenda said, pointing out that the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning allocated funds for expropriation to pave the way for the project implementation. ALSO READ: Giporoso-Masaka road expansion to feature flyover In early January, Munyampenda told The New Times that the 1.2-kilometre flyover will be set up section on the road’s section from Prince House to the area called Ku cya Mitsingi. It will also consist of four lanes. He said the flyover will ease traffic congestion on the road.
