NYAGATARE - Students from the School of Finance and Banking (SFB) who are residents of  Nyagatare District, last week joined parents in the construction of classrooms in Karangazi sector.

The students are grouped under an association called Home at School Association.

"We decided to conduct such an activity because of our quest for self sufficiency,” Edward Byarugaba, the association’s chairman said.

"We cannot sit back when our young sisters and brothers are still studying under trees.”

The students committed to offer further support including voluntary teaching in various schools, during their holidays.
According to the Executive Secretary of Karangazi, Emmanuel Murenzi, the sector needs over Rwf54 Million to build 12 classrooms and 42 pit latrines in three cells.

So far Rwf1Million has been raised from residents, he said. ‘There is a long way to go according to the set plans that we have, since the only partner we have is the Ministry of Education and the citizens,’ he added.

James Gafurama, officer in charge of youth at the district said: "Youth have decided to take charge of pressing matters facing society. That is why they are taking responsibility by assisting in this endevour.”

Gafurama implored other student associations in the country, to emulate SFB students as a way of creating a good learning environment which is necessary for quality education.
