AFTER winning this year’s Coupe du Rwanda title, Kigali Volleyball Club (KVC) is fired up for the upcoming Rutsindura Memorial tournament.

The annual tourney, held in memory of Alphonse Rutsindura, a former coach of the national women volleyball team throws off this Saturday in Huye.

KVC lifted their first title in two years after Sunday’s 3-1 victory over a muddled up APR side. 

For KVC, victory marked a sensational turnaround in the team’s fortunes.

Right from the first set, the Rafiki-based side looked in fine touch, blocking as a unit and frustrating APR with their non-stop spikes.

The momentum dissipated a little when they lost the third set (21-25) but after words of encouragement from their veteran coach Jean Marie Nsengiyumva, KVC edged APR in the fourth set (25-23) to seal a deserved win.

Now, Nsengiyumva is already predicting a return to the club’s dominant years.

"We are starting training tomorrow (today) because we want to win this trophy too,” Nsengiyumva, who has coached KVC since 1997 said of the Rutsindura event.

"What we have been lacking in the past couple of years is confidence but we all know that with winning titles comes confidence,” he added.

On top of the Rutsindura event, Nsengiyumva also has his eyes on Carre’d’AS-the final tournament on the national volleyball calendar.

The event is scheduled for November 10-11.
