KARONGI – A row has erupted between a resident of Bwishyura sector in Karongi District and a local leader, over the auctioning of some property.

The property which includes a house and a piece of land was bought by an official in charge of security at the Bwishyura sector for Rwf350, 000 by auction last month.

It however, emerged later according to sources that the price offered turned out to be below the market price for the property and the house was later sold to another person for Rwf1.8 million without informing the initial buyer.

The property belongs to a Genocide convict, Damien Nzamwita, and it was auctioned in order to raise money to compensate for property that was allegedly destroyed by Nzamwita during the Genocide.

Nzamwita is currently serving his sentence doing community work (TIG).

A police source confirmed that they have received complaints but investigations are still ongoing. "We are investigating the matter and justice will definitely prevail,” a police source said.

Bonifrida Mukangango, the wife of Nzamwita, says the house was sold illegally without her knowledge and she has petitioned provincial leaders and police over the matter.

"The officials involved seem to be making huge profits out of this transaction yet the actual proceeds will not help us pay the fine that court ordered my husband to pay,” Mukangango said in a letter copied to various provincial leaders and the police seeking redress.

According to Mukangango, her husband was ordered to pay Rwf2 million but the officials sold the house at a much lower price.
