MUSANZE - Former commercial sex workers in Musanze District, have committed to lead better and productive lives after being rehabilitated back into mainstream society.

Over 80 of the former commercial sex workers aged between 15-22 who were homeless are now being rehabilitated at Centre Umwari with support from Caritas-Ruhengeri Diocese.

"I have been on the streets for quite some time now. This is due to the fact that I have no parents. As street girls we were very much exposed to grave dangers such as contracting diseases like HIV,’’ Emerine Nyirabakuze a member of the group says.

According to Rev.Fr Theoneste Munyankindi, the Director of Caritas-Ruhengeri, the girls are to undergo a three month rehabilitation programme, which includes counseling after which they will be exposed to different technical skills for the purposes of enabling them to be self sufficient.

The girls appealed to their colleagues still engaged in commercial sex to abandon what they termed as a ‘risky profession’.
