BUGESERA - Fishermen on Lake Cyohoha in Bugesera District foiled a suicide attempt by a woman.

According to the fishermen, Jean Uwimana, 45, a resident of Ruhuha village was rescued after she attempted to commit suicide following a domestic quarrel with her husband.

"She went straight after her quarrel with her husband into the lake where we saved her when she was on the verge of drowning,” the fishermen narrated saying they had to administer first-aid on her.

Talking to The New Times, the mother of five said she wanted to commit suicide out of anger, because her husband had stopped their daughter from going to school.

"I have had terrible time with my husband who never wants a girl-child to go school. She studied up to senior three. All this time he never appreciated any importance of sending a girl child to school,” Uwimana said.

The woman claims the constant harassment of their daughter by her husband drove her out of home and ended up seeking refuge in ‘strange places.’

"My child was impregnated by a vagabond, while in senior three. I attribute this to the father’s mistreatment which is the primary reason why I had decided to take my life. It is not worth to live a meaningless life,” she added.

The girl identified as Claudine Ukubereyimpfura, is nine months pregnant.
