KARONGI - In a surprise move the District Advisory Council has sacked 20 workers for under-performance.
Authorities say this is meant to improve the district’s performance rating.

The sacking follows an evaluation exercise which was conducted to assess the work output of all government workers.

Three out of the 20 were dismissed without any annuity, while the rest will be paid two thirds of their previous salaries for a tentative period of six months from the date of their sacking.

The Mayor Bernard Kayumba said: "The  six month interim payment thus forms part of the termination package we have worked out for them.”

The New Times learnt that among those sacked included those who lacked relevant and mandatory qualifications.
However, some of the sacked workers expressed surprise over the district’s decision.

"I was always among the best performers and the decision to drop me has taken me by surprise. I can’t completely rule out foul play but I’m not yet decided whether I will contest such outcomes,” the former Executive Secretary of Ruganda sector, Theresa Nyirangirimana, told The New Times by phone.
