Algeria v Rwanda (Oct. 10)

AMAVUBI Stars are scheduled to start residential training next Tuesday ahead of their must win 2010 World/ Africa Nations Cup qualifier against Algeria on October 10.

The wasps need to win in Algiers to stay in the race for a slot at next year’s Africa Nations Cup in Angola.

Amavubi are still at the foot of Group C after managing a solitary point from their four group games.

After a disappointing goalless draw against Algeria, Branko Tucak’s team dented their World Cup hopes after losing their next three games.

The team suffered a harsh 0-1 defeat in Zambia, went down in Egypt 0-3 before succumbing to another harsh 0-1 defeat in the return leg.

Despite the high stakes, Ferwafa’s vice president Vedaste Kayiranga is convinced that the team can get that all very important result in Algeria.

He believes that with the return of key players like Patrick Mafisango, Mbuyu Twite and Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza ‘Migi’, the team will be in better shape.

"This is not the right time to buckle. We have a big game coming up and need to keep our confidence up there if we are going to get the result that we want. We know that we need to win in Algeria to stay in the race,” the soft spoken official said.

Mafisango and Mbuyu were suspended for Egypt’s return leg while Migi sat out the game after failing to recover from a toe injury.

Algeria top the group with 10 points, Egypt is second with seven while Zambia are in third spot with four points.
Rwanda is yet to score in the campaign.

Elsewhere, Ghana became the first African country to qualify for the 2010 World Cup finals after their 2-0 Group D win over Sudan.

Cameroon also kept their hopes on track after beating Group A leaders Gabon 2-0.

In Group E, Ivory Coast is within a point of reaching her second successive World Cup.

The team ran out 5-0 winners in their previous group tie against Burkina Faso.

It is still a tight race however in Group B where Tunisia and Nigeria are neck to neck.

Group winners qualify for the World Cup while the top three in each group advance to the Africa Cup of Nations.
