GASABO - Gasabo district authorities have decided to temporarily block the expropriation exercise of land in the district to allow developers first make use of the available land.

The decision was confirmed yesterday by Claudine Nyinawagaga, the Mayor of Gasabo in a telephone interview.

Nyinawagaga said that many real estate developers acquired large chunks of land, which they have not developed.

"It would be of no use to keep giving out more when many plots are redundant.”

"We want the evaluated land to be put to use first, before we start allocating new plots.”

According to the Mayor, close to 350 hectares of land in the district has not been developed since last year.

It includes over 100 hectares in Kinyinya which is supposed to be jointly developed by the Rwanda Housing Bank (BHR) and Social Security Fund of Rwanda (SSFR).

Another 140 hectares in Gacuriro are also supposed to be developed by SSFR while 50 hectares in Rusororo and 15 hectares in Gacuriro are to be developed by Real Contractors.

The development comes a month after the residents of Kinyinya petitioned members of parliament to help them reclaim their plots in a saga that has dragged on for almost two years.
