Rwanda Utilities Regulatory Authority (RURA) has penalised nearly 100 public transport operators for overcharging passengers, as it works to ensure compliance with newly approved transport fares across the country. In a statement on Friday, April 17, RURA said it was closely monitoring adherence to the revised fare rates and taking action against operators who fail to comply. It also encouraged passengers to report any irregularities through its toll-free line 2222 or official social media platforms. The enforcement comes in the context of recent fuel price adjustments. Petrol prices at the pump were increased to Rwf2,938 per litre, up from Rwf2,303, while diesel remained unchanged at Rwf2,205, following a tariff revision announced by RURA on April 16. In Kigali City, the base fare was set at Rwf59.28 per passenger per kilometre, while intercity fares increased to Rwf41.58 per passenger per kilometre. Despite the fuel price increases, the Ministry of Infrastructure has said this will not necessarily result in higher public transport fares, especially because the price of diesel has remained at Rwf2205 per litre. Minister of State in charge of Infrastructure Jean de Dieu Uwihanganye said government measures are in place to help stabilise transport costs for passengers using public transport services.
