JUBA - Uganda were in great shape beating Ethiopia 4-0 as the Cecafa Under-17 football championship started in Sudan Wednesday.

The match, the first international to be staged at the Juba Stadium also witnessed the return of Ethiopia, who have over the past two years been serving a Fifa ban.

Julius Kigori placed Uganda on the winning ways in the 35th minute, bringing to an end a series of missed chances for the side that finished runners up to Burundi in the inaugural tournament two years ago.

Dan Sserunkuma made it 2-0 in the 68th before Abdallah Mohamed (86th) and Ismail Kabasu (89) completed the humiliation.

With that win, Uganda have literally made it into the quarter finals as three of the four teams in the group that also includes Kenya and Zanzibar qualify.

The other group producing three quarter finalists is A, based in Khartoum and composed of hosts Sudan, Tanzania, Somalia and guest side Malawi.

Meanwhile, Rwanda’s opening match with Eritrea had not kicked off by press time. Initially, Rwanda was supposed to play against guest team, Egypt but the Egyptians never made it to the tournament and were removed from the fixture list, leaving group C with three teams.
