RWAMAGANA - Local Government Minister, Christophe Bazivamo, has retaliated the need for farmers to fully utilise modern terraces.

Addressing hundreds of farmers engaged in terracing in Fumbwe Sector, in the Rwamagana District, yesterday, the Minister said he was not happy with the way terraced land was being used.

He went to challenge the local leaders and agriculture officers in the area, to encourage farmers to plant specialised crops that suit the soils, instead of growing many different types of crops.

"Terracing long steep hills helps maintain soil fertility and therefore increases agricultural production in general. You are thus on the right track,” he said.

"You must be self reliant. Rwandans cannot afford to depend on handouts-it is time for you to change your attitude towards work.”

Earlier, the Minister inspected a number of agricultural activities in the district, before meeting local leaders.

The Mayor, Valence Ntezirembo, assured residents of the district’s support in development activities.
