The Bujumbura 7s tournament was a complete flop after the Burundian rugby federation elected to use amateur referees who had very little knowledge about the game.

According to reports from Remera Buffaloes, one of two Rwandan teams that had turned up for the event, the umpires were given crush umpiring courses on the eve of the tournament.

Buffaloes’ coach-player Gerald Nsenga told Times Sport that the event was a complete mess but the team tried to persist out of the love for the game.

"The tournament was a complete mess from day one. We could have pulled out from the start, but we decided to carry on for the love of the game. But after the third game, we couldn’t take it any more,” Nsenga said.

"From the umpiring, it was clear that the umpires did not know what they were doing.

Later on, we came to learn that the umpires had only been given crash courses a few days to the tournament.”
