Fifty years ago, in Nkamba village, at the heart of Kibungo, a modest cooperative saving scheme Banque Populaire du Rwanda (BPR) was born. It was a vision rooted in community, a belief that financial empowerment should not be a privilege but a right. On August 4, 1975, when BPR initiated their financial services to its members, it wasn’t just about savings and loans; it was about enabling dreams, building businesses, and nurturing a nation’s economic pulse. A half century later, that vision has evolved, but the essence remains the same: BPR Bank is a bank for the people, with a mission that has only grown more ambitious. What began as a community-focused cooperative has transformed into a powerhouse of financial inclusion. BPR’s journey has mirrored Rwanda’s own transformation—resilient, strategic, and forward-looking. Today, as a member of the KCB Group, BPR Bank stands as a pillar of Rwanda’s banking sector, with the biggest branch network reaching millions across the country. From one branch to a national footprint, from paper transactions to cutting-edge digital banking, BPR Bank has redefined accessibility. It has been instrumental in financing key sectors such as agriculture, trade, and infrastructure, fuelling Rwanda’s economic engine. The bank has consistently made banking accessible to all Rwandans, ensuring that even the most remote villages benefit from financial inclusion. By advancing mobile and agency banking, embracing fintech partnerships, and closing financial gaps, the bank has positioned itself at the forefront of digital transformation. Beyond accessibility, BPR Bank has actively championed small businesses and women empowerment through targeted funding, and mentorship programs. It has led the way in sustainable finance, prioritizing environmental, social, and governance (ESG) investments while strengthening financial stability and regional connectivity through its integration with KCB Group. As the bank celebrates its 50th anniversary this year, it is not simply looking back but setting the foundation for the next era of growth. We are at the midpoint of the bank’s three-year strategy, ‘Transforming Today Together,’ a bold vision that is shaping the future of banking in Rwanda. Digital transformation is at the heart of this evolution. The bank is integrating advanced technology to provide seamless and secure banking experiences, ensuring customers can transact effortlessly, anytime, anywhere. However, transformation is not just digital; it is about responsible banking. Sustainability is no longer a choice but a global necessity, and BPR Bank is leading the way—financing eco-friendly projects with 20% of its loan portfolio dedicated to green lending, supporting ethical business practices, and driving ESG-focused policy. The commitment to Rwanda’s youth remains unwavering. Through the BPR Foundation’s flagship social empowerment project IGIRE, BPR Bank is not just financing young entrepreneurs but equipping them with the knowledge and tools to lead. Vocational training, financial literacy, and mentorship programs continue to be central to the bank’s social development agenda that has educated over 1000 Rwandans to date. Crossing the Rwf 1 trillion mark in assets last year was not just a financial milestone—it was a statement of intent. The bank’s ambition is clear: to strengthen its presence in infrastructure, manufacturing, trade, agriculture, and tourism, positioning itself as Rwanda’s preferred financial institution for corporates, SMEs, and individuals alike. BPR Bank will unveil its 50th anniversary commemorative logo today. An initiation of activities that will culminate in the main celebration event on August 4th, 2025. This is a moment of gratitude and renewed purpose. This is not just a celebration of longevity but a reaffirmation of a mission to serve people diligently. The BPR story is still being written, and its next chapters will be shaped by collective innovation, financial inclusion, and social impact. To our shareholders, customers, employees, and partners, this journey has been possible because of your consistent support. Here’s to 50 more years of resilience, and to the boundless opportunities ahead. The road to transformation is long, but together, BPR Bank will continue to build a stronger, more prosperous future for you, our esteemed stakeholders.
