Athletics: Sina Gerard, APR dominate podium at track and field champs

The Sina Gerard, APR, and Police athletic clubs were once again dominant on the medal podium after their athletes produced outstanding performances at the 2025 national track and field championships which took place at Amahoro Stadium on Saturday, February 15.

The monthly championship, which was in its second edition, is organised the Rwanda Athletics Federation as part of not only raising the level of athletes’ performances but also serving as a platform to discover new talents in the sport.

Over 650 athletes from 14 clubs participated in the competition which featured men's and women's categories, encompassing 13 different disciplines.

Sprinter Magnifique Umutoniwase (APR) emerged the standout performer, bagging three gold medals in the women's 100m (12.16 seconds), 200m (24.45 seconds), and 400m (55.43 seconds).

Fast-rising runner Claire Uwitonze, who plays for Sina Gerard was the top headliner in middle-distance events, winning gold in both the women’s 800m in 2:11.84 and 1500m in 4:20.96

In the women's long-distance races, Jeanne Gentille Uwizeyimana of Police Athletics Club won gold the 5000m in 16:59.28, and Sina Gerard’s Florence Niyonkuru struck gold in the 10000m, clocking 35:57.20.

Lucie Uwimana from Sina Gerard excelled in the field events, securing victories in the long jump (4.98m) and triple jump (10.97m) while her teammate Bernise Koraniyebega dominated the in the throwing events, winning gold in the shot put (8.46m), discus (24.95m), and javelin (36.64m).

In the men's competition, Eric Tuyishimire from Nyamasheke displayed impressive speed, striking gold in both 100m in 10.49 seconds and 200m race in 21.81 seconds.

Benjamin Nsanzumuhire, who plays for Sina Gerard, emerged victorious in the 400m where he clocked 49.77 seconds to bag medal. Oreste Hategekimana, also from Sina Gerard, also struck gold in the 800m which he ran in 1:55.25, while Victor Ingabire of APR won both the 1500m in 3:55.32 and 5000m in 14:3.08.

Elsewhere, Noel Hitimana (APR) dominated the 10000m in 29:59.44. Djibril Mirimo Masengo (Sina Gerard) won the long jump (6.10m) while Police AC’s Pompidou Tuyishime excelled in both the triple jump (13.62m) and shot put (11.46m).
