ELIAS Uzamukunda scored a late winner yesterday to earn APR their second win at the East Africa Military Games.

The army side, who were playing against a hard tackling Kenyan Ulinzi side at Nyamirambo stadium, stepped up their game in the second half after a dull goalless first half.

APR took the lead through a Jean Baptist Mugiraneza header in the opening minutes of the first half to send the quiet crowd ablaze. Full-back Karim Nzeyimana doubled the lead shortly with a cool finish.

However, Ulinzi known for their fighting spirit replied with clinical finishes from Hussein Muhammed and Lawrence Owino to put the pressure back on the home team who had slowed down the tempo of the game.

With less than ten minutes to stoppage time, Haruna Niyonzima’s through pass found a well placed Uzamukunda, who calmly slotted the ball at the back of the net to seal APR’s win.

Despite APR’s effort, Ulinzi coach Sammy Simiyu couldn’t hide his frustrations about the refereeing. "The referee was biased but I’m still confident that we shall retain our title,” he said.

APR now top the table with six points. Ulinzi and Burundi’s Muzinga are tied in second place with three points while Uganda’s Simba are still looking for their first points after losing their opening  game against Muzinga.
