GATSIBO — The Association of Volunteers for International Service (AVSI) over the weekend handed over 14 houses worth Rwf.35 million, constructed for needy  groups in Gatsibo District.

The 14 houses constructed in Muhura Sector are part of a total of 42 houses which will be built in three phases.

"The intention of this project was to help those who do not have shelter at all and are currently being accommodated by sector authorities. It also helps those living in grass-thatched and dilapidated houses,” Daniella Kayitesi, the coordinator of the MAE8130 project said.

Kayitesi said that they would construct an additional 10 houses in due course after registering a  healthy mode  of cooperation exhibited by local leaders and area residents. 

The project will also construct another house for an orphaned student living with disability, who was not included on the original list, she added.

Emmanuel Bagire, the Executive Secretary of Muhura Sector, said: "I appreciate the contribution of this project; it helps people get decent shelter. It is very good for our residents.”

He commended residents for their support to the project by making bricks and clearing the land where the houses were constructed.   

"Since I was born I was living in a grass-thatched house and I thought I would die without acquiring a modern home .This to me is a dream come true,” Joel Hakizimana, one of the beneficiaries said.

"The project developers  visited me and realised that I was among those people who deserved to be helped. I think it is a very good gesture for the needy,” added the father of five.

MAE8130 project operates under AVSI and is funded by the Italian government. The three-year project started in 2008.
