Hours before Rwandans and the world make merry to usher in the New Year, the Rwanda National Police (RNP) on Tuesday reminded people to party carefully so that no life or property is lost during the approaching moments of happiness.

People in the country are urged to celebrate responsibly and to put safety first.

The Police has previously emphasized that the excitement that comes with the festive season celebrations should not be the reason for life to be lost.

CP John Bosco Kabera, Rwanda National Police Spokesperson, on Tuesday tweeted: "A few hours and we ring in the New Year, so here are some reminders: Don’t drink and drive, don’t overspeed, avoid distractions on the road, avoid noise pollution, don’t leave your house or children unattended, do not serve or sell alcoholic beverages to minors.”

On Christmas Eve, Kabera said security organs are ready to ensure the security and safety for all during the festive season but stressed that this also "requires everyone’s active involvement.”

The Police has also reminded the public that in case of an emergency, toll-free lines for the police are; all emergencies 112, traffic Accidents 113, ambulance services 912, fire Brigade 111, marine 110, and complaints against a police officer 3511.

On New Year's Eve itself, tens of thousands of people are expected to attend church services, and music concerts in various designated parts of Kigali and elsewhere in the country.

The City of Kigali has also announced four spots where people from across the city can meet to watch fireworks to say ‘Good Bye’ to 2019 and welcome 2020 in style.
