KARONGI — The state minister for Primary and Secondary Education, Theoneste Mutsindashyaka has challenged local leaders who registered poor performance standards  in the Karongi district to resign from their posts.

He was speaking on Friday, at a consultative meeting with the local leaders at the provincial auditorium in Karongi. He particularly criticised Karongi District leadership for what he called ‘creeping leadership’ and warned they would face dismissal unless they changed.

‘I wonder how some one poses as the vice Mayor in charge of economy yet he does nothing to uplift it. Such a leader should resign right way,” he said while commenting on the performance of the Karongi District vice Mayor in charge of finance and economy, Jean Baptist Hakizimana.

‘You are sitting in your office in charge of that institution (Economy) yet all banana plantations are drying up…what can you show if asked about the level of development in your district?,’ he asked. He also blamed Sector Executive Secretaries for the slow pace of development of the district.

The minister particularly spoke on the poor coffee plantations in the district and urged leaders to learn from their neighbours.

"This district is among the poorest in coffee production yet you have the same opportunity like others. You should take a case study on Rutsiro to improve on your production,’ he said, adding that he will start following the day today activities in the area to ensure the implementation.

The meeting was attended by among others the Western Province governor Celestin Kabahizi, Senator Chrysologue Kubwimana and MPs from both districts.
