KARONGI — The Mayor of the Karongi District, Bernard Kayumba has called on residents to play an active role to ensure speedy implementation of the district’s goals this year.

He was speaking last week, during the Accountability Day that was held at the district headquarters in Rubengera Sector. He noted that the district in partnership with residents had expected to implement many activities but some were not completed due to poor cooperation.

‘Last year we were committed to doing community work worth millions of francs but we did not successfully reach our target. We need to create good cooperation in order to register improvements in 2009,’ he said.

During the ceremony, all residents were given a guided tour around the district premises  and were given a chance to know and ask how their taxes were being used.

The Mayor presented to residents the  2008 achievements and set the 2009 goals. The Mayor pointed out that there were some hurdles that hampered the completion of certain projects but said the projects would be completed not later than June this year.

He cited Gacaca cases in the justice sector, construction of 50 feeder road net work and setting up secondary schools in readiness for 9 year Basic Education, as among the unfinished business by the district authorities.

Residents hailed the district for organising such a unique event and requested them to always invite them for such activities.
