African volleyball champs: Tough start for Rwandan teams

Rwandan representatives Gisagara and Police volleyball clubs were off to a slow start to the African Men's Club Volleyball Championships taking place in Cairo, Egypt, after lost their opening games against Algeria’s ASW Blida and Kenya Ports Authority, respectively, on Sunday, April 14.

Gisagara were handed a 3-1 humbling by ASW Blida despite showing the spirit of resilience in the first two sets.

The Rwandan champions lost the first set 18-25 but they quickly pulled the game even after claiming the second set 25-16. But it was the Algerians who pulled some unstoppable later taking the third set 26-24 and the fourth 25-15 to finish the game in style.

Meanwhile, Police also lost to Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) 3-1(25-17,23-25,25-21,25-20) despite showing some resistance in the first two sets.

Gisagara are in Group C alongside Port Autonome De Douala (Cameroon), Rukinzo Volleyball Club (Burundi), ASW Blida (Algeria), Prisons Volleyball Club (Kenya) and Volleyball Club Espoir (DRC) while Police found themselves in Group D alongside Kenya Ports Authority (Kenya), Green Buffaloes Volleyball Club (Zambia), University of Zimbabwe Wolves Club (Zimbabwe) and Volleyball Club Garde (DRC).

Both teams will be looking to bag their first win in the continental competition when they return to action on Monday April 15 against Green Buffaloes and Prisons Volleyball Club respectively.
