Volleyball memorial tourney due in June

The Rwanda Volleyball fraternity will honour the victims of the 1994 Genocide against Tutsi with a volleyball tournament slated for June 1-2 in Kigali.

The genocide memorial volleyball tournament was initiated by former Rwanda international Antoine Sebalinda in 1995 after his brother Dominique Sebalinda was killed during the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi, alongside other national team players.

The volleyball fraternity counts over 50 members including players, coaches and admininstrtors who lost their lives during the genocide.

Ahead of the tournament, volleyball federation (FRVB) Secretary-General Philbert Mucyo called on the volleyball fraternity to "continue the spirit of remembering the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi” and well as use the occasion to honor members of the volleyball family killed during the devastating time.

Countries likes Kenya, Uganda Congo Brazzaville, Burundi, Ethiopia and host nation Rwanda are expected to be represented in the tournament.

Gisagara volleyball club are holders of the tournament in men’s category while Police won the title in the women’s fray.
