Mount Kenya University (MKU) has climbed six places in the latest Webometrics survey and now ranks among the 10 best universities in Kenya. Consequently, Mount Kigali University Vice-Chancellor Dr. Martin Kimemia, has paid tribute to the Kenyan university for its excellent performance.

Says Dr. Kimemia: "We are proud to be associated with MKU’s excellent academic performance. As a former campus of MKU here in Rwanda and now fully autonomous, our university owes its academic heritage to the Kenyan university.”

MKU is ranked tenth out of 124 universities in Kenya, an improvement from position 16 in last year’s ranking. It is among the two private universities in the top 10 list in Kenya.

Webometrics has ranked the university in position 151 out of 1,393 universities in Sub-Saharan Africa, and number 285 in the continent out of 2,057 universities.

Since January 2022, MKU has been rising in the Webometrics rankings.

"MKU’s rise in the rankings over the years is the outcome of the institution’s commitment to continuous improvement,” says Dr. Kimemia, adding: "I commend the founder, Prof. Simon Gicharu, for his consistent investments in education, and in particular, the infrastructure, equipment and quality faculty that support teaching and learning.”

The Mount Kigali VC also lauds the MKU Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Deogratius JAGANYI and the management team for driving the institution to great success. "They have done a fantastic job just as they did when our university was still a campus of MKU,” says Dr. Kimemia.

He adds: "Now autonomous, Mount Kigali University continues in that path to offer quality education in Rwanda. Our commitment to quality is also reflected in the construction of Kagarama campus in Kicukiro District.”

The university is expanding and, as the VC says, "we are proud to have opened a University Medical Centre recently and will soon open Kigali Paramount Hotel, which will be a regional centre of hospitality and tourism training. The hotel will be open to the public. These two establishments will be handy in enhancing hands-on experience for our students in the school of hospitality and tourism and health sciences.

Dr. Kimemia points out that Mount Kigali University retains its tradition of investing in infrastructure that promotes practical learning. He cites Royal FM, used in training journalism students, as an example of such investments made much earlier.

He cites the nursing skills labs as yet another example of massive investments by the university to enhance learning.

Mount Kigali University existed as a campus of MKU for more than a decade before getting the Government of Rwanda’s nod early last year to operate as a fully-fledged university.
