EASTERN PROVINCE

NYAGATARE — Sixteen members from the civil society in Nyagatare district have been elected to observe the forthcoming parliamentary elections in the district.

Meeting the group at Nyagatare Nursing School on Thursday, Faustin Vuningoma, a member of the national civil society group, explained that the elected members would oversee the conduct of the people during the time of campaigns and polling.

"The role of these people is not to arrest those breaching electoral rules and regulations.

They will be overseeing how the campaigns and elections are conducted in their respective areas and then give the report like other observers in the country,” Vuningoma said.

The members were urged to be objective in their activities, adding that the elected people should be impartial in their work.

"As civil society members we are not supposed to show any political affiliation,” he added.

However, Vuningoma said that the elected people are entitled to vote like other citizens.

They were also urged to be honest, secretive and consider gender in their work.

Yvonne Muhongaire, the district director of good governance, who represented the district Mayor, called upon the elected members to respect the electoral laws to ensure smooth elections.
